An historic victory has been won through struggle. Millions of people, from all sectors of society, organized and mobilized to defeat McCain and elect Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States. The message from the masses is clear: a rejection of the war on Iraq, a repudiation of Bush’s domestic and foreign policy, and a resounding ‘no’ to the Republican agenda and the right wing. The result is a powerful blow to racism and white supremacy, and an inspiration to oppressed nationalities and youth in this country.

Asheville, NC – When members of the University of North Carolina – Asheville Students for a Democratic Society (UNC-Asheville SDS) heard that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was coming to hold one of her lynch mob style rallies in Asheville, there was no question of organizing a protest. Workers, students and members of the Asheville community assembled outside of the Civic Center downtown. On Oct. 26, there was an outpouring of over 300 protesters who confronted Palin and her rally of supporters.

We are quickly approaching what promises to be the most historic election in recent memory. People will have an opportunity to send a clear message rejecting the last 8 years of war, racism, sexism and heterosexism, attacks on civil liberties, and corporate greed by giving John McCain a resounding defeat at the polls. Voters in California also have an opportunity to reject a number of ballot initiatives that will (to just name a few) institutionalize homophobia, throw more people behind bars, and undermine a woman’s right to abortion.
To encourage everyone on campus to take advantage of this historic opportunity, we are organizing a public speak-out on Monday, November 3 – the eve of the elections:
No to the War! No to McCain! No on the Six!
Monday, November 3 2008
12-1pm
Meyerhoff Park (in front of Kerckhoff)
Come join students and members of the campus community to discuss what is truly at stake this election! Also, feel free to distribute the attached flier for the event.

As the election season comes to a close, all candidates are pulling out all the stops to ensure victory. For the McCain campaign, this means using racism as a way to convince Americans that they should not vote for Barack Obama. John McCain’s racism is becoming more and more apparent the closer we get to election day.

McCain = War
“…[The surge] has succeeded. And we are winning in Iraq. And we will come home with victory and with honor.” – John McCain, Presidential debate, September 26, 2008
You would think that only someone totally ignorant to the past five years of the Iraq war could utter these words. How else could someone use “victory”, “success”, and “honor” to describe the catastrophic ruin and destruction in Iraq? But it’s not that McCain is ignorant about the facts. It’s that he and his elite, imperial friends have a different measure for “success” than the rest of us.
McCain’s “victory” is this: occupied and subjugated Iraq; an end to Iraqi sovereignty; a Green Zone puppet government that does the bidding of its American masters; contracts for oil field development to Big Oil; death squad rule in the name of democracy. Continue Reading »

As the U.S. economy plunges into a deep crisis, McCain says that the economy is “still strong”. He does not seem worried at all that he is going to lose one of his seven houses, while most Americans are having to worry about foreclosures on their only home. We are witnessing major financial institutions go down: Bear Sterns, AIG, Fanny Mae, Freddy Mac. Banks like Washington Mutual are being pulled under along with them. Around the country working people are seeing the cost of living increase, wages go down, and unemployment on the rise. The response from George Bush has been to take $700 billion ($700,000,000,000) of tax-payers’ money to bail out the rich. Continue Reading »
